Week 5 Learning Journal
Part One: Support and Comment on Teammates' Goals
Part Two: Possible Capstone Ideas
One of my ideas for a capstone project is to design and implement a mobile and web based customer communication and project tracking portal for a small to medium sized roofing company. Improving transparency and customer satisfaction is the overall objective. The portal through updates available in real time gives customers detail information on their roofing project starting from the initial bid through final inspection. The mobile application will allow the roofers to take and upload pictures of their project progress, record pictures of any unexpected surprises and check off milestones as they are finished. At the same time the web portal would permit the customer to log onto the portal and see the current status of their project and also inspect a time lapsed gallery of pictures taken of the project being done on their roof. I would also like to add a built-in roof measurement tool that uses Google’s satellite imagery so that estimators and homeowners can tag a roof on a map, and instantly find square footage and perimeter. Payments could be made through the app through its phases, so roofers and sub contractor are on the same track of completion. The portal would hold this measurement with the job, adjust for roof slope whenever necessary, and use it for neat material and cost estimates. This will make bids faster and more accurate, giving them the immediacy of price more, cutting out trial and error in the field, and giving the installation crew as well as the homeowner a common visual basis for the fact of the project. The project will also provide a simple means for the customers to approve change orders electronically to thereby improve communications and reduce administrative costs. This system will be designed to be an easy to use functional tool to aid both the customer and the roofing crews in gaining a functional easy to use tool which directly improves customer service and also meets or improves operational efficiency of the service provider.
Another idea is, a Goal-oriented "game" (for all ages) For parents: Set family savings goals together, and as you meet milestones, the app rewards you with a visual “celebration” or animation of your progress. This begins to solidify the idea of shared responsibility for a common reward. For kids: They can have their own savings goals in their virtual “account” (i.e., new video game). Doing chores or homework selected in the app can help them earn money towards this goal, thus teaching them the art of earning.
For the third idea, im thinking of a wellness app with a safety-first philosophy that transforms what you’re feeling into simple and supportive suggestions but not a diagnoses. You spell out what you’re feeling in simple terms and the app comes up with small, actionable suggestions across herbal teas, herbs, and food adjustments. Each response describes “why it may help,” offers simple how-to suggestions, and has clear cautions about allergies, medications, and pregnancy. Also, a prominent “when to seek care” note about red-flag signs. and an app to support everyday wellbeing.
Part Three: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal
This week I focused on tightening up my study habits and reading instructions more carefully as I realized that I hurt my grade with my last essay score. The assignments pushed me to slow down more, focus on the outlines, and double check rubrics before starting. Also, I learned a lot of good information from the career focused work: how to take vague goals and distill them down into next steps (resume tweaks, portfolio links, clearer scopes of projects) and also how to ask better questions when networking. As far as internships go, I’m shooting for an HP summer internship by updating my resume and LinkedIn, going to a fireside chat/networking event with Myriad Genetics (a biotech company), and lining up referrals from friends in the industry/alumni. I’ll also set weekly application targets and practice technical interview questions. I’m keeping grad school on the radar but only after I’ve finished a year in industry and know what I want to specialize in. Overall, I feel much more organized and much more intentional.
